Support our COMMUNITY Initiatives

At Radical Family Farms, we have 3 Community Initiatives integrated in our production farm that embody our core values: Community, Social Justice and Sustainability. Our Community Initiatives are: 1) Food Access and CSA Assistance, 2) Climate Smart Farming, 3) Mentoring and Training Under-Represented Beginning Farmers. We have been working with our Community Initiatives since the farm’s founding. Starting in 2022 with the partnership of our 501c3 fiscal sponsor Possibility Labs, we are opening up our work to the public by seeking financial contributions in the form of tax-deductible donations. Donations can be made online or by check. With your contribution, you can help us make these dearly held programs a permanent feature of the farm. All donations will go into a single account and will be applied as needed.

If you are well resourced, share similar values or have extra to give, please consider making a tax-deductible donation. We'll send you a tax receipt for your donation. Your contribution will have an immediate impact and we will be eternally grateful for your support.

OUR COMMUNITY INITIATIVES

1) Food Access AND PRESCRIPTION PRODUCE: FREE CSA SUBSCRIPTIONS FOR SENIORS IN OAKLAND AND SAN FRANCISCO CHINATOWN

Goal: $25,000 to feed 20 Seniors weekly September to October 2024, plus $500 for delivery services to San Francisco Chinatown CCDC SRO residents.

  • Feeding Seniors in Oakland and San Francisco with full CSA subscriptions. In 2020, when the pandemic hit and with the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes, we wrote for a grant to deliver CSA farm boxes to feed seniors in need. Sonoma County’s Ag + Open Space created a one-time Agricultural Support and Protection (ASAP) Emergency Matching Grant Program that funded our 1st year initiative. In 2021 we partnered with Oakland Chinatown’s Lincoln Recreational Center to locate and feed 10 Asian American seniors with culturally relevant, nutrient dense produce with our CSA boxes. In 2022 we partnered again with Lincoln Park Recreation Center, Family Bridges and the Vietnamese American Community Center of the East Bay (VACCEB) to feed 33 AAPI seniors and families in need.

  • In 2023 we feed 20 seniors in San Francisco Chinatown who reside in SRO (single room occupancy) buildings managed by the CCDC, and 10 seniors in Oakland Chinatown who use the services of Lincoln Recreation Center. These seniors are on a fixed income, are often non-English speaking, and eldery. With the decrease in benefits of CalFresh, many of our most vulnerable seniors are having to choose between buying their medicine or food. Honoring and caring for our elders is a deeply personal and cultural value. Each full season subscription costs $845 per person, which provides 13 boxes of culturally relevant, nutrient dense, Asian-heritage produce, every-other-week, from May-October.

  • Our 2024 annual goal is to raise enough money to feed 20 seniors September and October, 2024 and to provide delivery to our San Francisco (CCDC) and/or Oakland distribution partners

  • Thank you for supporting our most important Community Initiative with a tax-deductible donation so we can continue to provide healthy and fresh produce to our communities in need.

2) Climate-Smart Regenerative Farming

Fundraising Goal: $5,000 per year

  • Pollinator and Butterfly plantings to increase habitat for monarchs, bee populations, pollinators and predatory insects for our IPM (integrated pest management) program.

  • Capture carbon and maximize nutrients using low-to-no tillage farming method.

  • Reduced water usage through soil building with compost application and cover crop.

  • Funds will cover compost, cover crop seed, and labor costs needed for planting and farming in this regenerative manner.

3) Mentoring and Training Beginner Farmers

Fundraising Goal: $15,000 per year. This initiative is inactive.

  • We provide opportunities for AAPI, BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ folx to learn how to farm. This program is essential to bring forward the next generation of QTBIPOC farmers that have been historically underrepresented and shut-out from opportunities.
