Radical Family Farms is a 1.5 acre, low-till, regenerative farm that grows farm flowers and culturally relevant vegetables and herbs for the Bay Area’s Asian diaspora. We attend the Sebastopol Farmer’s Market year round and we supply wholesale customers through FEED Sonoma. We are located in Sebastopol, California in the heart of Sonoma County: 5940 Fredricks Rd, Sebastopol, CA.

FARMER, Part-Time: ($17-$25 DOE)

This position reports to the owner and is responsible for executing the production in the field. The ideal candidate is independent, enjoys completing farming tasks alone and has the ability to lead a small team (1-2 laborers) when needed. This is a part-time position, 2-3 days per week (16-30 hours). Working hours are 8:00am-2:30pm and will adjust with daylight hours. More field days may be added in the height of the season.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 seasons of full-time employment (non-intern) in the for-profit sector of market gardening, commercial farming, landscaping, or as a professional laborer. Understanding of small-scale, mixed-crop annual vegetable cultivation including greenhouse and field activities, weed management, plant health, harvest projection, harvest, and wash/pack/storage practices required. This position will be the sole field employee for the majority of the season, and will periodically work alongside the owner. There is no on-farm housing available. Spanish speaking skills a plus. Ability and willingness to follow our standard operating procedures and have a keen eye for quality of produce. Paid working interview to assess movement, proper shoveling form, and quality and efficiency of transplanting and harvesting.

  • The work week is tentatively set 2-3 days per week: Monday, Thursdays and Fridays. Optional rotation into our weekend Farmers Markets for more hours. Our Sunday market is year-round. Saturday market is seasonal.

  • Mid-November to February: The farm rests. There may be opportunity to work periodic Friday harvests and Sunday farmer’s market.

Job Duties:

  • Weekly tasks: Seeding according to crop plan, transplanting according to our standard operating procedures: hand transplanting, watering in, laying irrigation, bed flipping following our process, weeding, tarp management, efficient harvesting, washing, and packing for market and wholesale.

  • BCS tractor work. The ideal candidate must be able to operate the BCS 2-wheel tractor and its implements safely and with care. The Farmer will be trained on our field/bed prep procedures and will use the tractor extensively in their job. Understanding of small engines, engine maintenance, manual transmission, handiness, troubleshooting and repair is highly desired.

  • Work in low to no-till beds with understanding of the physical aspects of small scale farming. Hand transplanting, shoveling, and broadforking are a big part of the job.

  • Use of market garden tools like the Paperpot, Drop Seeder, Jang seeder, Earthway seeder and Dibbler. Farmer will care for and treat the equipment with respect and take ownership to troubleshoot, problem-solve and repair when there is an issue.

  • Technical knowledge and familiarity of Irrigation systems: timers, drip, overhead, storage, management. Experience and confidence to repair, troubleshoot, and install irrigation and take ownership to resolve issues when seen. Broken valves, chewed drip tape lines and leaks are repaired immediately. Care is used when operating tractor over the header lines.

  • Daily gopher trapping using a variety of mechanical traps

  • When leading a crew, sets an example of competence, professionalism, hard work and commitment; displays a sense of enthusiasm, fun and appropriate urgency; uses time effectively and efficiently; prioritizes and divides tasks and focuses time accordingly.

  • Continual improvement in our farming process and within self. Well-honed interpersonal skills, with the ability to both follow direction and communicate respectfully and effectively in high pressure situations. Attention to detail. Respect and care for the farm, keeping it neat and tidy, making repairs when needed. Finding balance between hustle, efficiency and quality. Ability and willingness to follow our Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Opportunity to work the Sunday Farmer’s Market in rotation with crew. Good customer service skills, solid understanding of our crops, farmer’s market experience and professional interactions with customers, chefs and restaurant owners required

  • Deliveries as needed. Must have a valid drivers license and clean driving record.


FARMERS MARKET ($17-20 DOE)

The Farmers Market position will take the lead on weekend farmer’s markets in Sebastopol (Sunday year-round now) and Sonoma County (Saturday seasonal June-October 2024). Good customer service skills, understanding of our crops, farmer’s market experience and professional interactions with customers, chefs and restaurant owners needed. An eye for retail setup and restocking product to ensure all produce is sold. Please be able to lift 50 pounds - this job requires setup, breakdown and staffing of the booth independently. Following our register reconciliation and post-market procedure is a requirement of the job. Safe driving record is needed, as this position will use the farm van to transport booth and produce to markets. Valid drivers license and safe driving record to be added to our insurance. Pay: $17-20 per hour, depending on experience

Start Date: Applications open with immediate start date to train in our Sunday market.
Part-time: 1-3 days a week, 6-24 hours per week (Friday (harvest/wash/pack), Saturday (seasonal market), Sunday (year-round market). Schedule will rotate with crew.
Year Round: December to February goes to 1-3 market days (Sunday in Sebastopol) per month
